Notes: The Nazi-Soviet pact of August 1939 on the surface agreed a state of non-aggression between the two signatories. However, the secret clauses agreed to carve up Poland and establish spheres of influence in Europe. Stalin was almost obliged to seek rapprochment with Hitler, given that he calculated that he needed approximately 3 years to be really ready for war. Hitler used the N-S pact as a means to avoid the war on two fronts that had compromised Germany during World War I. Therefore, the Molotov-Rippentrop pact was, in reality, the stepping stone HItler needed to actually embark on war. |
