After studying aeronautical engineering at Hatfield Polytechnic - now the University of Hertfordshire - for two years from 1960 to 1962, he worked as a trainee in a commercial art studio. He was then employed by Gilchrist Studios and others in London before becoming a full-time freelance commercial illustrator in 1969.

In 1986 Emms began to concentrate on cartoons and caricature, and since then he has contributed to Punch, Tatler, Independent and various national newspapers and magazines, mostly using pen and watercolour. In addition he has worked as a sculptor and painter.
