Our grouping/lightbox functionality can be used to support learning/teaching. Initially the BCA will be creating approximately five "resource packages" which will be developed on themes consistent with the current curriculum but that is only a start. As more people start to develop and share their groups it should be possible so see not only how other people are using cartoons in their learning and teaching but to get ideas and new insights.
We will also be making resources available to help people understand how to read and analyse cartoons. These will include two papers
• Biographical Survey of a Cartoonist (David Low)
• What is a Political Cartoon?
But while all these are formal resources, there is a great deal of useful information and resources throughout this site.
Biographies of cartoonists
Have a look at biographies of cartoonists, such as Carl Giles;
Metadata/catalogue entries
When viewing a cartoon, remember to read the text to get insight into what was happening at the time the cartoon was produced.
Flexible and sophisticated searching
Searching enables you to find much more than a specific cartoon. You can find out:
- what was happening on a specific day in history by seeing all the cartoons produced for major newspapers on that day.
- how well known politicians and important personalities were perceived.
- how major events were presented and criticized
- when topics or events were of concern
Ongoing development of additional resources
The BCA is always interested in supporting learning and teaching activities and assisting the sharing of information related to cartoons. If you have an idea you would like to pursue, or have used cartoons and would like to show us or tell us about your experience, please do not hesitate to contact us.
