NotesNews: Aug. 9: For the second time an atomic bomb fell upon Japan today, obliterating Nagasaki, the ship-building centre on the Japanese island of Kyushu. Smoke and dust clouds completely covered the town and rose five miles high in a giant mushroom-shaped cloud. Japan claims that 70,000 perished and more are dying daily. The world's first atomic bomb, with 2,000 times the blast power of the "Grand Slam" British bomb yet only a tenth of the size, destroyed Hiroshima three days ago. Both raids were carried out by the US Army Air Corps' Super-Fortress aircraft. President Truman delivered a fresh warning. "If Japan does not surrender, atomic bombs will be dropped on her war industries." He had already threatened "A rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth." ... [Chronicle of the 20th century] The news of the appalling destruction at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was followed by the revelation that after a secret race of five years to forestall the enemy in the production of an atomic bomb, British and American scientists had succeeded in solving the problems of nuclear fission and the release of atomic energy. Thus victory brought a question of crucial importance to the human race: Would Man, so ingenious in invention, apply the new discovery to the constructive arts of peace, creating for himself immeasurable material betterment? Or would he so immature in reflection, use it as yet another means to the conquest of power, thereby risking his own utter destruction? [Caption for "Years of Wrath" by David Low]
