Notes
The Summer Olympic games were due to open in Los Angeles in July 1984, but two days before this cartoon appeared the Soviet Union had declared that it would be boycotting them, citing security concerns and "an anti-Soviet hysteria" in the United States. The boycott was widely regarded as retaliation for the American-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, and the Soviet lead was followed by thirteen other Eastern Bloc countries. In this cartoon by Carl Giles, the newspaper headlines read "HERE WE GO AGAIN", and Grandma wishes that the whole thing would go away.
