Despite the Nazi-Societ Pact of 28 Augusut 1939, the Soviets and the Nazis remained, inevitably, opposed. Although they had agreed, secretly, to divide Poland, once the Nazis had consolidated their gains, the Soviets stood their ground, refusing to sanction a Nazi advance.
