News: 31 Jan: Thirteen civilians were shot dead in Londonderry as British troops stormed into the Bogside area after thousands of anti-internment marchers had been dispersed at a city centre barricade. Civil rights leaders taking part in the march, which had been banned by Stormont, accused troops of indiscriminate firing but the Army said that they were replying to snipers' fire and that the dead might not have been killed by soldiers. A senior officer of the official IRA in Londonderry said members had now been given freedom to shoot as many British soldiers as possible. ... [The Times]
