This book draws on Giles vast private archive, held by the BCA. It reflects every aspect of his professional life, from producing the cartoons and running his studio, to dealing with editors and replying to fans. There is not a great deal prior to 1942, for, as Giles later explained, “my records...of that time were destroyed during the Blitz”. But from that point onwards he kept almost everything, in a huge private archive that grew to include almost 6,000 original cartoon drawings and 1,500 cartoon prints, plus a vast image library of cuttings and photographs, correspondence, reference books, and the paraphernalia of his studio.
