Creating cartoon groups
The grouping facility on the BCA catalogue can be used to create cartoon teaching packs tailored to your needs. These can be devoted to a particular subject, an individual cartoonist, a specific historical period, or whatever you need for your course.
To create a group just select cartoons from the 120,000 on the BCA catalogue, add a title, introduction and contextual notes, and publish the group on the BCA website. As the cartoons do not leave the website you do not have to clear copyright.

After logging-on to the BCA website, just follow four steps to construct a group:
- Create an archive of the cartoons that interest you;
- Select the ones you need for a particular group;
- Add a group title, introduction, and explanatory notes;
- Publish on the web.

Creating an archive of cartoons
The first step is to log onto the site by clicking the link at the top of the page:

Once you have logged on, you will find that every cartoon in the BCA catalogue now carries an "Add to favourites" button. If you click this button the cartoon will be added to your archive of favourites:

A banner will appear at the top of the page, confirming that the cartoon has been added to your favourites archive, and the button on the chosen cartoon will change to read "Remove from favourites", in case you decide not to use it:

If at any time you wish to review your archive of favourites, there is a "View favourites" link at the top of each page on the BCA website:

Your archive of favourites will not be deleted when you log off, and will be available when you log in again. You can add or remove cartoons whenever you visit the site.
Turning your favourites into a group:
If you wish, you can turn all of your favourites into a group, just by and clicking the link on your favourites page to "Create group with all favourites":

Or you can build a group from selected cartoons, by clicking the "Select favourite" box underneath each one:

When you have finished selecting cartoons from a page of favourites, choose "Add to a new group" in the box at the bottom of that page, and click the "Go!" button next to it:

The selected cartoons on this page will be marked "Selected for new group", and you can move to the next page of favourites. When you have finished selecting cartoons for your group, go to the top of the page, where a new banner will have appeared, inviting you to "Review records selected" or "Move to next step of group creation":

Clicking "Review records selected" will give you a display of the favourites you have selected for your group, with an opportunity to revise that selection. Clicking "Move to next step of group creation" will begin the grouping process, although you will not lose the ability to revise your selection at a later stage.
If you choose "Move to next step of group creation", you will first be asked to confirm that you wish to create a group, rather than consult the BCA about this group of cartoons:

Once this is confirmed, you have the opportunity of giving your group a title, and of adding an introduction of up to 500 words explaining what it is, and how it can be used:

This page also invites you to decide if other users can leave comments about your group:

Clicking "Next step" will take you to a page where you can review your cartoon selection. If you wish you can add to it, or change the order in which it will be displayed by adjusting the weighting. Each cartoon also has an "Add annotation" button, which you can click to add notes to a particular image:

Clicking this button takes you to a page where you can enter up to 500 words of comment or explanation to each cartoon. These comments can be cut and pasted from other sources:

Once you have added your comments, and are satisfied with the number and order of cartoons in your group, click "Publish group". Your group will be published on the BCA website, and an email will be sent informing the BCA that a new group is available:
You will also see an "Edit" tab, and if at any stage you wish to return to your group, to add additional cartoons, remove old ones, change the text, revise the order, or reset the comments field, you can do so by clicking this tab. Once you have logged in it will appear whenever you view your groups.
