In December 1979 the Soviet Union sent troops into Afghanistan. Soviet officials stressed that this was on the basis of a request for "help" from the Afghanistan government, and an action designed to "save" the Afghan people from the rule of President Amin. However, observers around the world viewed the events differently and suggested a variety of alternative reasons for possible Soviet intervention in the Afghan Civil War.
The Soviet forces eventually withdrew in 1988, leaving behind them a country which had been anything but "saved". The cartoons in this group show how Western views of the Soviet-Afghan war developed and suggest links to other events of the period such as: detente, the Moscow Olympics, the Lebanon and US-Soviet peace negotiations.
