Here we have the first selection of two offering images of New Labour's relationship to the Welfare State. The of the images are shared with the parallel group on the previous Conservative government - one from around the time when Tony blair took up the Labour leadership and two from the 1997 election campaign. The remainder of the cartoons in this sub-group come from the first year of the first New Labour administration. While the BCA is at pains to point out that its electronic resource does not provide a comprehensive database on cartoons, by any standards the number of cartoons archived during that year which are concerned with the Welfare State is quite remarkable. A second 'sub-group' - New Labour and the Welfare State II - lists cartoons on the same topic for the period after 1 May 1998 up to and including 2003.
