We are now familiar with the events of September-October 1938 in which Britain and France agreed to German Chancellor Adolf Hitler's demands for control of the Sudetenland area of Czechoslovakia. The decision was controversial at the time, and historians are still discussing the events of that period today. Of course it is easy to make judgements in hindsight, and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain is generally seen as a weak man who was deceived by Hitler. But is that how he was seen at the time?
