The Conservatives lost both the February 1974 and October 1974 General Elections. Thatcher stood as Party leader, and defeated Heath in the first round. She then faced Willie Whitelaw in the second.

On 19 January 1976 Thatcher made a made a scathing attack on the Soviet Union, declaring that “The Russians are bent on world dominance, and they are rapidly acquiring the means to become the most powerful imperial nation the world has seen...They put guns before butter...” The Soviet Defence Ministry newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda (“red star”) gave her the nickname "Iron Lady", and this was eagerly taken up by her supporters.
