Question:
My publisher says that I have to pay for all the illustrations I am using, so can the BCA charge me a lower fee?
Answer:
Publishers frequently ask authors to pay all the costs of illustrating books and articles, and this includes not only copyright clearance but also the cost of obtaining high-resolution images. This causes considerable problems, especially when copyright holders impose high charges for reproduction. However, the BCA is an academic department that has to recoup the cost of supplying high-quality images for publication, and cannot reduce its charges in order to subsidise commercial publishers.
