Giles built up and kept his own reference cuttings files and library because he did not work from the Fleet Street office of Express Newspapers. He worked from his own studio in Ipswich or at his home at Hillbrow Farm, Witnesham (near Ipswich). His material included publications or articles featuring his own work, general reference items (subject or people), and publications on other cartoonists and cartoons/art in general.
Pulls (or proofs) were made from the printing plates at the Express before publication as a quality check and these were returned to Giles to be kept for reference purposes.
