Notes: "The Western Front, Oct 21-28. ... Towards the end of the week very large concentrations of German troops were reported not only on the Western Front but along the Dutch, Belgian and Swiss frontiers and on Germany's North Sea coast. It was estimated that about 1,500,000 men, comprising between 70 and 80 divisions, had been assembled, and a large-scale offensive was believed to be imminent. Notes: The Western Front, Oct 28 to Nov. 4. ... A marked recrudescence in aerial activity on the Western Front occurred in the week. The French communique of Oct 31 reported that a German reconnaissance plane had been brought down in the French lines, while two enemy observation machines crashed out of control on the Saar front. At the same time French machines had returned intact from successful reconnaissances deep into enemy territory. On the same date the British Air Ministry reported that on Oct 30 "British fighters had their first opportunity to engage German bombers over French territory"; two enemy machines observed flying high were attacked by R.A.F. fighters, one of which (a Dornier machine) was brought down, while the other made off. On Nov 1 the German High Command claimed that six Allied planes had been brought down on Oct 31. ... [Keesing's Contemporary Archives p.3783]
